SAN DIEGO, Jan. 18, 2012 – /PRNewswire/ – Today, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) introduced its new Energy Innovation Center (the Center), a showcase facility where residential and business customers can learn about energy efficiency, alternative fuel transportation, Smart Grid, and clean generation.

The Energy Innovation Center offers an array of seminars on energy efficiency; classes in the food service demonstration kitchen; tours of the Smart Home full of energy-saving technology; information in the resource library, and guided tours of the water-wise walkway which showcases drought tolerant plants that save water and energy.

“The Energy Innovation Center will be a valuable resource for the community,” said Hal D. Snyder, vice president of customer solutions for SDG&E. “We are committed to helping southern California reach a more sustainable energy future and the Center will provide businesses and residential customers with the tools and resources they need to make smart energy decisions to be more energy efficient, save money, and help the environment.”

In December 2010, SDG&E began construction on an existing 27,000-square-foot building and focused on designing and constructing a facility that is designed to meet U.S. Green Building Council’s Platinum LEED certificate, the highest level of certification for energy-efficient buildings. In order to meet the LEED platinum certification, SDG&E was required to incorporate the latest sustainable design elements in the Center’s design. Some of the sustainable elements of the Center include:

85 percent of the original building’s materials were reused or recycled. The roof will have a rain water collection unit that stores water used for the Center’s irrigation system. The state-of-the-art Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning (HVAC) system has sensors that shut off the A/C when the windows are open. The solar panels heat the Center’s water and help offset the building’s energy use by 34 percent. Most of the items seen in the Center are made from recycled materials, including the carpet which is made from recycled tires. The Center showcases different examples of highly efficient lighting, HVAC units and leading technologies to demonstrate the choices available for businesses and design professionals to incorporate into their buildings. Many of the program offerings and design features are the result of a collaborative approach with community-based organizations, local businesses and other key stakeholders and technology sponsors.

Key features that customers can experience at the Center include:

Smart Home experience tours;

Sustainability tours;

Interactive kiosks, displays and resource library;

Solar Trees® in parking areas that provide both shade for your car and power for the region;

Water-wise walkway with drought-tolerant landscape demonstrations;

Produce Demonstration Garden;

Food Service Demonstration Kitchen.

A key component of the Center is the full commercial Food Service Demonstration Kitchen that boosts numerous energy efficient appliances that introduce new features to the food service world that saves energy and saves money for chefs, restaurant owners and facility managers with food service kitchens. At the Energy Innovation Center, chefs will have the opportunity to utilize the demonstration kitchen to test their recipes on energy efficient equipment to ensure that the updated appliances work well with their dishes.

“The San Diego County Chapter of the California Restaurant Association commends San Diego Gas & Electric on the opening of their new Energy Innovation Center,” Chris Duggan, director of local government affairs for the California Restaurant Association. “This state-of-the-art facility will provide our industry professionals the opportunity to experience cutting-edge technologies and utilize educational resources that will increase energy efficiency and environmental leadership.

Audio Impact Installation of the week: 85 inch TV Installation

Audio Impact specializes in San Diego, Rancho Santa Fe and La Jolla Home Theater.

Our client wished to updated their existing NEC 65” Plasma for a Panasonic 85” 3D-TH-85VX200U 3D TV. Audio Impact upgraded the control system to a Crestron TPS-6X. The TV had to be hoisted up with a crane as it’s so massive. The wall that it was mounted on had to be reinforced with backing to allow the OmniMount PAN85PRO wall tilting mount to be secured. To enhance the sound in the room the speaker were upgraded to Monitor Audio Platinum PL300 Floor standing speakers, featuring ribbon transducers. These speakers were matched up with a Integra DHC-80.3 and Sunfire aAmplifier.

The end result is a easy to use system, with phenomenal picture and sound.

Pushbutton Paradise

April 29, 2011 by Rebecca Day

It started off with a request for basic lighting control. The owner of this Del Mar home simply wanted to control the newly installed LED and security lights on the property from the master bedroom suite above the pool. The backyard, meanwhile, was undergoing a complete overhaul, morphing from an area with a simple pool and barbeque pit to one with an infinity pool, sauna, Jacuzzi and outdoor kitchen/dining room.

The custom electronics (CE) pros from Audio Impact, San Diego, Calif., fulfilled the lighting request with a Control4 system that organized the sconces, pool lights, and security spotlights into easily accessible zones. Since they were there already, Audio Impact president Ryan Lipkovicius asked the client, why not add a little music and some video, too? Eighteen months and 250 feet of conduit later, the backyard had been wired for six zones of audio and a big-screen Jacuzzi theater.

The owner got his bedroom-controlled lighting system and then some. He can turn on lights in various zones of the backyard to keep an eye on the kids, check on the firepit, and turn off the pool or security lights without having to leave the bedroom. Audio Impact added a three-way switch outside that mirrored the lighting commends in the bedroom so that the lights could be managed from either place.

Control was a key concern for the owner, who didn’t want to have to go to different areas to change the volume on speakers or flip lights on or off. Audio Impact had the benefit of being able to start from scratch with the backyard do-over. The crew ran wire in conduit to speaker locations and control pads and installed specially designed pool speakers according to spec. Underwater music requires heavy-duty amplification, according to Lipkovicius. The pool speakers are fed 100 watts each because “you need a decent amount of power to move sound through the water,” he explains.

There’s a central Control4 touchscreen controller in the master bedroom above the pool deck where the owner can set the lights and volume levels for each zone, including the Paradigm on-wall speakers on the balcony above the pool deck. Individual controls in each zone allow users to tailor the sound at those locations. The outdoor kitchen received a bit of special attention. In addition to an independent volume control for the music, there’s an OnQ intercom station. From it, the parents can call any of the three kids to dinner from various locations in the house. They can also use the intercom to buzz in guests who are waiting at the front door.

The spa area got its own private theater, a Samsung 46-inch TV built inside a thick shatter-resistant pane of glass. The sealed window in front of the TV protects it from moisture and doors cover the TV for extra protection when it’s not in use. All of the video sources from the home’s main video distribution system are available to the spa theater. This includes DirecTV, cable, Apple TV, a Blu-ray player and feeds from the surveillance cameras around the property. While the five other zones in the backyard enjoy a single source—usually a Rhapsody online music channel—spa users can toggle between music and TV audio while watching a movie or game. As for the indoor entertainment system? The owners save that for a rainy day.

Underwater Tunes
Installing pool speakers in is a lot like putting a light into a pool, says Ryan Lipkovicius, president of San Diego–based Audio Impact, the company added the electronic elegance to this award-winning backyard. The round Aquasonic speakers and their special housings, which were used in this award-winning space, had to be positioned at a certain depth based on the volume of the pool. “You need enough pressure for it to work,” Lipkovicius says, and in this infinity pool that depth was about six feet. At the proper depth, the speaker vibrates the water, resulting in music “that sounds pretty good,” Lipkovicius says. “I was amazed.” EH

The pool includes special underwater speakers built into the pool’s frame.

This outdoor oasis even has an entire built-in kitchen complete with a pizza oven.

The entire backyard is packed with hidden technology.

The Jacuzzi area features a TV hidden behind two wooden swing doors. TV is built into a custom design deck/housing on a swing arm behind a glass wall to ensure it is completely weather resistant.

The outdoor lighting is controlled by a Control4 system. One button from the Mater Bedroom keypad or any touchscreen turns all groups of outside lights on and off.

Most people head to the nearest sports bar when they want to watch more than one football game at once. The owners of this 12,000-square-foot home in San Diego, Calif., just walk upstairs to their newly constructed game room.

High-level sports viewing was the impetus for building the space, says custom electronics professional Ryan Lipkovicius of Audio Impact in San Diego, Calif. “One of the owners is a football fanatic, so a top priority when building the house was to have a room dedicated to it.”

While the 700-square-foot game room was being constructed, Audio Impact laid out its plans. The front wall would feature an arrangement of five Pioneer plasma TVs: one 60-inch display in the middle, flanked by two Elite 42-inchers on either side.

Each display would be fed by its own high-def satellite receiver and controlled by the same Control4 touchpanel. It’s cool enough to be able to press one button to turn on five games simultaneously, but Lipkovicius took the cool factor up several notches by enabling the owners to move the images to whichever screen they want—plus operate the room’s lighting and heating and cooling—all through the one touchpanel.

Engaging a sports button on the lighting menu, for example, activates the lights by the bar at the back of the room. Touching movie, on the other hand, fades out the lights, and the owners can activate their Sony Blu-ray player and direct the movie onto the 60-inch display. There’s also a button that pulls a view of the front door surveillance camera onto the screen.

Lipkovicius could have stopped right at the game room, but he was able to stretch the homeowners’ $150,000 budget to include other features. The master bathroom, for example, was fitted with a 32-inch Sharp TV and a Control4 keypad. The TV was positioned behind a pane of two-way glass that functions as the vanity mirror. The Control4 keypad was planted on the wall near the bathroom entrance so that the owners can set the display and lights the instant they step inside. On the keypad is a button for each homeowner. One button tunes the TV to CNN; the other to a favorite sports channel. The bathroom lights also brighten when either button is engaged, but only if it’s nighttime… Click here to view the full article

The NFL and College Football seasons are looming. Here are some of our favorite mulitple display media rooms we’d love to spend fall Saturdays and Sundays in.

Game Room

While the 700-square-foot game room was being constructed, Audio Impact laid out its plans. The front wall would feature an arrangement of five Pioneer plasma TVs: one 60-inch display in the middle, flanked by two Elite 42-inchers on either side. Each display would be fed by its own high-def satellite receiver and controlled by the same Control4 touchpanel. It’s cool enough to be able to press one button to turn on five games simultaneously, but installer Ryan Lipkovicius took the cool factor up several notches by enabling the owners to move the images to whichever screen they want—plus operate the room’s lighting and heating and cooling—all through the one touchpanel.

Fantasy Football Paradise

This ideal sports-watching setup consists of nine plasma HDTVs. The biggest screen, a 63-inch Samsung 1080p plasma, is in the center. Above it, there are two 42-inch Samsung 720p plasmas, and below it are two 42-inch Panasonic 1080p plasmas. The remaining Samsung units were mounted to the left and right of the 63-incher.

Billiards and Touchdowns

The plasmas in here are of the Panasonic variety, but if you turn around the room has an even bigger video surprise—a 130-inch Screen Innovations screen that’s fed by a 1080p SIM2 projector. Surround-sound comes via a Klipsch THX Ultra2 7.2 speaker system, with a Denon receiver and B&K Reference amplifier.

6 Screens, 6 Jerseys

Designed and installed by the custom electronics pros at Hi-Tech Home in Clovis, Calif., the wall consists of six individual 42-inch Panasonic flat-panel displays, mounted in two horizontal rows of three. Each TV is connected to its own DirecTV high-def satellite receiver, all of which reside out of sight in an equipment closet.

Gators Guru

This homeowner had included a multiple display setup in a previous home theater. He doesn’t use his season tickets to the Swamp as much these days, so multiple displays to watch the Gators and other big SEC games and more college and pro football became a priority.

3 Screen Paradise

For this ex-college football player homeowner, a Stewart Filmscreen screen in the main theater area receives images from a Runco CL-810 single-chip DLP projector and is flanked by two 26-inch Sony Bravia 720p LCDs, while two more of the Sony LCDs hang by the bar area. The bar TVs are visible from both the billiards and card-playing areas, which flank that space.

Hockey Night in Canada

OK, so this Canadian hangout is better for hockey viewing … but there’s always the Calgary Stampeders, right? A 120-inch Da-Lite screen takes center stage in this theater as you sit below a mini jumbotron that itself features three screens.

All-in-One Man Wall

For starters, this ultimate sports fan’s fantasy features a 52-inch Vizio LCD as the centerpiece eye candy, surrounded by three more smaller Vizios. On the audio side, you get a 5-disc 1080p upconverting DVD player, iPod docking station and 1,200-watt Panasonic 5.1 theater system and a pair of wireless surround speakers. All of the cabling is completely hidden.

Game and Sports Room

Spiro Razatos’ theater area includes a large game room with 16 networked Xbox 360s and LCD monitors for real fun and games with all of his friends. It also includes personal touches like favorite football memorabilia.

LCDs, when Screen Goes Up

Busy sports Saturdays and Sundays are no problem to follow when you can tag-team the games with multiple screens—like the four high-def LCDs from Planar. They’re on the same wall as the projection screen, and easy to control in the Crestron video distribution system. And that’s when the 8-foot projection screen is retracted.
