Vizio is giving its XVT line a 3D upgrade. Vizio just launched three new 3D TVs to round out a product family that includes 3D active shutter glasses, two 3D Blu-ray players, high-speed HDMI cables and a Wi-Fi router optimized for the web-based apps available on many of the company’s products.

The XVT 3D TVs come in three sizes: 55”, 47” and 42”. All three 1080p LCD TVs use LED backlighting, but the two larger models employ a local-dimming full away system, while the 42” model uses edge-lit LEDs in a system Vizio calls Razor, also with local dimming. All three models feature Vizio’s Apps (VIA), as does the Blu-ray player…

Goodbye HDMI, Hello HDBaseT

Founded by Samsung, Sony, LG and others, HDBaseT looks to replace the HDMI standard while offering more bandwidth.

LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Valens Semiconductor have been secretly conspiring to kill HDMI. And today they set their plans into motion, introducing a brand new audiovisual standard, HDBaseT. While that name may sound confusing, before you slap your head, this will not likely introduce a new kind of cable to your house.

Past A/V standards from industry groups have introduced a plethora of connectors (S-Video, HDMI, DisplayPort for example), so that makes this release all the more unusual. Instead of a new connector, it is based on the Cat 5e/6 network cables, commonly referred to as “ethernet cables”.

It supports cable lengths up to 328 feet. The cable can pass HD and 3-D video signals, as well as data through an integrated 100MBit Ethernet connection. That data feed should allow for new internet-connected TV services, such as Google TV which delivers advertising-funded services to TV sets….

The standard will begin its rollout later this year. The majority of its volume will hit in 2011. Check out the comparison table below:

Samsung believes, according to reports, that glasses-free 3D must be shown at a low resolution that most viewers would find unacceptable. Add to this the need for the viewer to sit absolutely still, lest the image become distorted, and glasses-free 3D still needs more time in the incubator before it is ready for the masses….

While other companies are concentrating on smaller, budget-friendly flat panels, Sony is moving ahead by introducing its first 3D projector. Based on the same SXRD tech you find in their commercial installations, as well as the company’s renowned Qualia projectors from a few years back. The company hopes that its projector will be just what the enthusiast crowd was waiting for, and it should be a boon to the emerging home 3D screen market, as well. While the new 3D projector undoubtedly pumps out more lumens, you’ll still need a screen with good gain to keep the brightness up, and a homemade, cheap, or ScreenGoo screen might not have the kind of reflectivity to really make the most of the 3D experience…

DirecTV’s 3D US Open Broadcasts to Start this Weekend. Panasonic is banking on an enthusiastic consumer takeup for the invitation. The company yesterday hosted an event at the USTA National Tennis Center – home of the US Open tournament – to note several milestones in the progression of 3D technology, products and broadcasting initiatives.
The event marked the debut this Labor Day weekend, and for the following two weeks through the finals, of worldwide 3D coverage of the tournament through a collaboration among Panasonic, DirecTV and CBS Sports. June 30, 2010 | by Rachel Cericola

Come 2013, it seems that 86 percent of plasma TVs will also be 3D TVs. At least that’s what market research firm Displaybank forecasts.

It may sound an awful lot like one of Conan O’Brien’s “Year 3000” skits. Instead, it’s part of Displaybank’s recently published report, “3D TV Industry Trend and Market Forecast.”

Basically the report says that in a few years most plasmas will have that 3D function. Whether users want it as a standard feature is probably for another report…

July 01, 2010 | by Arlen Schweiger

Where’s all the 3D content, you ask? Check us out today, answers DirecTV.

No, there aren’t a whole lot of scheduling details, but today, July 1, DirecTV has begun offering 3D content on its DirecTV Cinema channel, DirecTV On Demand channel and, in conjunction with Panasonic, a new “n3D powered by Panasonic” channel.

Flip over to channels 104, 105 and 103, respectively, to give them a look-see. The n3D channel, before we knew its name, has been anticipated since back at CES when Panasonic announced it, and, of course, DirecTV is touting Panasonic’s sweet new VT25 series as the ideal set to watch the new channels on.

The n in n3D can stand for “Network” or “In” according to Panasonic CTO Eisuke Tsuyuzaki, who discussed 3D, Panasonic TVs and the launch of the new channel during a national webcast on June 30. He said Panasonic worked with DirecTV because of its variety of programming, its national footprint and its On Demand channel’s prowess. He also noted that based on his talks with other broadcasters, this is clearly just the beginning—on the heels of ESPN’s 3D launch and before Discovery Channel’s 3D endeavor with IMAX….
